China’s Role as A Development Donor and China’s International Development Assistance
Programs: A case Study of Kenya
China continues to play a significant role as a development donor through its various
international development assistance programs facilitated by the China International
Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA). Among the countries that have benefited from the
various international development programs spearheaded by the CIDCA are African third world
countries such as Kenya and Tanzania which are among the leading recipients of foreign aid in
East Africa (Albiman 1). In Kenya, China has been involved directly in the development of mega
infrastructural projects such as the standard gauge railway traversing the country from the coastal
City of Mombasa to the capital city of Nairobi up to the border city of Kisumu. It is through such
cooperation with African countries that China has succeeded in playing its role as a development
donor.
These development assistance programs are relevant since they have helped majority of
African countries realize their development goals as wells as realize an improved economic
development (Charles 3). For instance, in Kenya, the construction of the standard gauge railway
has not only helped Kenya realize its vision 2030 but also opened up the Kenyan coast for
economic exploitation by its neighboring landlocked countries such as Uganda, South Sudan and
Ethiopia. By doing so, china has fulfilled its mandate as a development donor as well as
facilitated the success of its international development assistance programs.
