6.4 | Why do senior executives feel more comfortable relying on quantitative data than
qualitative data? How might a qualitative research company lessen the senior-level
executive’s skepticism?
Initially, qualitative research design was not applied in the field of business. Schindler
(2019) justifies this statement by reporting that qualitative research design originated from the
field of linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Schindler (2019) continues to
mention that this kind of research method focused on the interpretation, analysis, and translation
of people’s opinions collected to aid in the data collection process. Therefore, qualitative research
was prone to biasness and human error during collection, interpretation, analysis, and translation.
This is true considering the frequency of measures and the complexity of numerical data dealt with
in qualitative research. As such, many business professionals and senior- level executives
considered qualitative research methods not effective for business research. However, qualitative
research is essential in providing insights, explanations to specific patterns of events, and the
meaning of issues that might help the management to make an informed decision. To date,
qualitative research method is fast increasing in popularity in the field of business.
According to Myers (2013, p.5), “one of the key benefits of qualitative research is that it
allows a researcher to see and understand the context within which decisions and actions take
place.” This is essential especially where the researcher wants to communicate the technique used
in data collection. Often, the major data collection technique in qualitative research include
interviews which can either be individual or group based as well as a combination of observation
and interviews like action research and case studies (Schindler, 2019).
