LEADERSHIP THEORIES AND BEST PRACTICES 2
Personal Philosophy of Leadership
At times in one's life, one may get appointed as a leader to some circumstances that may
prove challenging. An example is in this for-profit organization, an educational organization that
provides training to adults learning skilled trades. The organization consists of highly dissatisfied
students, and staff morale is relatively low. As a newly appointed leader to this organization, I
can see that there exists the need to turn this situation around. Ideally, having clients who are
continuously dissatisfied and an unmotivated staff may lead to poor outcomes in the
organization, the training may be done poorly and the team, due to their dissatisfaction, may
prove to be incompetent. In the bid to make things better in the institution, I would need to act
promptly in the best possible way. That is why, in this scenario, I would opt to use the
Transformational Leadership Theory.
Transformational leadership is a school of thought that involves the leader closely working with
the team to identify the needed change, hence creating a crystal vision to lead to the shift
(Berkovich, 2016, p.609-622). This would be made possible through inspiration and execution of
change in cooperation with the committed team members. Consequently, transformation
leadership's purpose is to replenish the team members' motivation, morale, and performance
through different techniques: connecting with the team's sense of identity and self to a task and
the entire essence of the organization as well. Hence, the leader acts as a role model to his team
members with the intent to inspire them and help them gain interest in their different capacities
in the organization. Such a move would challenge workers to own their responsibilities. The
leader would then understand the team at personal levels on their strengths and weaknesses, thus
assigning them duties to better their performance.
