LAST CHANCE IN TEXAS 2
Abstract
The Giddings State School Capital Offenders Program is a program for juvenile offenders
located in Texas. Its goal is not only to stop recidivism among the juvenile offenders that it treats
but to teach them that they have value as human beings and choices outside of belonging to
gangs and committing crimes against other people. By allowing offenders in the program to
participate in such activities as role-playing, telling one another their own personal narratives,
and discussing the reasoning behind becoming involved in gang activity, residents become more
in touch with the part of them that they may feel as if they have lost early in their lives that led
them to a life in crime. The program also encourages offenders to better themselves through
completing their GEDs and becoming involved in job training. This can help successful
graduates of the program to find a way for themselves outside of the criminal element as they
grow up.
