Introduction
HSBC history began with the establishment of Hong Kong and the Shanghai banking
company on March 3, 1965, under a local company ordinance. After one month the company
opened its first subsidiary in Shanghai and later in the year the Landon branch was opened.
Some of the members of the cooperative with the exception of Jardine Matheson were the
Germans, the Americans, the Parsee Indian merchant houses, and the Scandinavian and the
American firm Russell & Company who later considered to join. The American firm Russel
& Company later considered joining the cooperative.
The economic crisis which happened between the year 1865-1866 could have brought
down the company were it not of its members who0 supported it wholeheartedly. Hong Kong
and shanghai banking companies managed to fetch workers from their competitors as well as
their operations. The company later changed its name to Hongkong and Shanghai Banking
Corporation during the colonial rule so that it could retain its headquarters as well as adhere
to the colonial banking regulations which expanded rapidly late in the 19th century.
However, world war I and world war II gave rise to many problems such as the closure of
some subsidiaries and also the imprisonment of some staff, especially those who were in
Hong Kong. After the war was over and the company had recovered, it went through an
international expansion between the 1950-1970s. i9n 1984, an agreement was signed between
China and Britain concerning the return of honking to Chinese control and expansion of
Hong Kong bank abroad. In 1986 Hong Kong bank acquired a leading security firm called
James Capel in the United Kingdom. The following year the bank acquired 41.9 of the
Midland stock and agreed to add more stock until three years were over.
In 1990, expanding and having a branch in Canada, Hong Kong bank purchased
Lloyds bank, which made it much more substantial. In 1991 due to uncertainties of the future
