Research Paper 1
Diabetes
In this research paper, I research abut diabetes. While we are living, we will be sick,
illness, and disease. So we need to avoid these, and if we are sick, illness, or disease, we need to
treat correctly. Now, there are many causes of death such as heart disease, cancer, chronic lower
respiratory diseases, accidents, stroke, and diabetes. I chose diabetes for this paper because my
father is diabetes. I also have a risk to be diabetes. In this paper, there are three parts: 1) what is
diabetes, 2) why will we be diabetes, and 3) what should we do if we will be diabetes.
First of all, I will explain what diabetes is. According to Mayo Clinic Staff, “Diabetes is a
disease in which your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the
foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy.
With type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. With type 2 diabetes, the more common
type, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in
your blood.” Glucose is the essential for our body especially brain, but if we have too much
glucose in our body, it is diabetes. There are two types of diabetes, called type 1 diabetes and
type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is not common, so only 5 percent of people have type 1 diabetes
among all diabetes people. Someone who has type 1 diabetes does not produce insulin. Insulin is
a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin helps to keep our blood sugar level form getting too
high or low. Therefore, if we do not produce insulin, we cannot keep our body sugar level. So
this is type 1 diabetes. The exact causes of type 1 diabetes is unknown. Most diabetes people are
type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a form of diabetes characterized by insulin resistance and

often associated with obesity. Insulin therapy can be used but is often not required. According to
contemporary nutrition, “Risk factors for type 2 diabetes are both genetic and environmental, and
include a family history of diabetes; older age; obesity, especially intra- abdominal obesity;
physical inactivity; prior history of gestational diabetes; prediabetes; and race or ethnicity.
Therefore, there are many causes of type 2 diabetes. Moreover, diabetes will cause some disease
such as hypertension, blindness, and stroke. According to America Diabetes Association, “In
2012, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3% of the population, had diabetes. Approximately 1.25
million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes. Diabetes was the seventh leading
cause of death in the United States in 2010 based on the 69,071 death certificates in which
diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death. In 2010, diabetes was mentioned as a cause
of death in a total of 234,051 certificates.” In the United States, many people had diabetes, and a
lot of people died by diabetes. In Japan, 27million people are diabetes, so the situation of
diabetes is like the United States.
Secondly, I will explain how we prevent for diabetes. I already explained that the exact
causes of type 1 diabetes is unknown, so we do not how we prevent type 1 diabetes. However, I
explained that risk factors for type 2 diabetes are both genetic and environmental, and include a
family history of diabetes; older age; obesity, especially intra- abdominal obesity; physical
inactivity; prior history of gestational diabetes; prediabetes; and race or ethnicity. Type 2
diabetes is strong genetic predisposition, so we should know family history that. Now, my father
is diabetes, so I know I have a higher risk to be diabetes than others who do not have diabetes in
their family. We should know that we have diabetes in our family first, but if we do not have
diabetes in our family, there is possibility of diabetes. We need to know that there are some
causes to be diabetes such as old age, obesity especially intra-abdominal, physical inactivity, and
