In the academics, especially in postgraduate research, a literature review is an
irreplaceable method of gaining insight into a specific field. It allows the researcher to compare
the different schools of thought on a particular topic and develop a specific conclusion. One can
write a literature review independently or incorporate it into a thesis, research paper or a journal
article. It is imperative to note that unlike an annotated bibliography that provides a simple
summary of each source independently, a literature review provides a holistic review of the topic
using scholarly information. This paper defines a literature review, assesses the importance and
the types of literature review while offering a research outline on how to conduct a literature
review.
Literature reviews provide a critical exploration of the published scholarly sources on a
particular subject. It goes beyond simply listing the different scholarly sources as in an annotated
bibliography. Instead, it provides a summary, evaluation, comparison, and classification of the
scholarly work in the field of interest. Literature reviews have some specific purposes. First is to
determine what scholars have already written about the topic. Second, it provides a way to
determine the overall concepts. Third, it allows the identification of causal relationships and
