DIVERSITY AND DISCRIMINATION 2
Diversity and Discrimination: Abercrombie and Fitch
Introduction
Diversity from the human resource management perspective entails the hiring of
employees from different backgrounds. In other words, diversity in workplace involves having
workers of different gender, age, physical ability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, educational
background and religious belief (Wrench, 2016). In particular, it is important to make sure there
is no discrimination during the process of recruitment and selection. Most importantly, valuing
the differences between potential employees and understanding the benefits of hiring employees
from different background is very crucial. Notably, having a positive attitude towards diversity
allows employers to hire the best employees based on talent and qualifications without
considering other factors such as gender, race, religion and disability which, may not be relevant
as far as ability to do the job is concerned. Without a doubt, having a positive attitude towards
diversity in order to avoid discrimination is of paramount importance during recruitment
(Wrench, 2016). However, this is not usually the case because some organizations tend to hire
workers based on their age, gender and religion rather than putting merit alone into
consideration.
Abercrombie & Fitch Case
This case involved Samantha Elauf, a 17 years old Muslim girl, who decided to seek
employment with a local clothing store called Abercrombie & Fitch (Paley, 2015). During the
interview, Samantha answered all the questions well but she was not hired because she was
wearing a hijab as required by her Muslim religion. Following this, Samantha sued the store and
the Supreme Court made a ruling in her favor claiming no one should be denied employment
because of his or her religious beliefs.
