CLINICAL QUESTION PAPER ON IMMOBILE PATIENTS 2
Pressure Ulcers
Introduction
Pressure ulcers (PR) remain a primary health challenge that affects about 3 million
persons in the United States. The prevalence of pressure ulcers is growing among persons above
the age of 65 years and the rise in elderly persons living with disabilities that affect mobility. The
majority of the pressure ulcers or bedsores emanate from sitting or lying in a similar position for
an extended period of moving. The growing people over 65 years with increased rates of
diabetes, cardiovascular disease, in addition to obesity, are facing pressure ulcers that resulted in
immobility (Moore & Webster, 2013). The combination of these factors has led to more
individuals requiring help with activities of daily living because of declined mobility. This
challenge has been associated with diminished mobility because of the development of pressure
ulcers. The management of pressure ulcers is lengthy, as well as causes of a considerable
financial burden on the healthcare sector, especially in the United States (US). The pressure
ulcers are common localized harm to the skin, or underlying tissue that occurs more frequently
over a bony eminence, as well as due to pressure, friction, or shave, alone or blend (Clegg &
Palfreyman, 2014). The individuals that develop pressure ulcers comprise elderly persons, as
well as critically sick and persons with neurological impairments plus those individuals that
suffer from conditions with immobility.
Research Question
For immobile patients, does the use of routine turn schedule, reduce the future risk of
pressure compared to specialty mattress?
