The Role of Education in the Modern World

Introduction

Over the ages, education has proved itself the most valuable tool for the growth and

prosperity of society. Each generation has a success story related to the principles of

education, which includes “informal” and “formal” education. Communities that had

their core economic activity like farming, for instance, have passed this to their

descendants via education.

In ancient Greece for example, Spartans started to train their children for war from

when they were just seven years of age. In Athens, children used to attend classes to

learn how to read-write, perform basic mathematics, play music, and do some

physical training (Carr, 2015). In ancient Rome, education played a big role as well;

young boys learned elementary arithmetic, how to read and write in addition to

military and physical training (Spartacus Educational, 2015).

In modern society, education has been responsible for propelling society past the

limits. Education has provided us with the current technological advancements that

have made life easier than before. Inventions like the telephone and the internet have

made communication trivial and it’s all thanks to education.

The additional role of education in this modern day and age is that it gives people a

better chance at financial stability. Through formal education, an individual is able

to pursue a career of their choice so that they may earn money through that.

Education is self-empowerment (Turkkahraman, 2012). Education generates some

form of an advanced scale of life which guarantees that people value hard work and

do not use dishonest ways to gain wealth. Moreover, as noted by Pargaru et al.

(2009), education has contributed to generating solutions for certain problems such

as health problems and environmental disasters. It has facilitated a reduction in

occurrences of health problems and turned devastating pandemics into things of the

past.

In conclusion, education can never finish for it is not limited to formal education but

also informal education learned outside of educational institutions. A knowledge-

based society has a higher chance of prospering compared to an uneducated one.

Finally, education has proven to be a tool for self-empowerment used by women to

prove that they are truly equal to their male counterparts.
