Describe the relationship between health care cost and quality. Address the following:

1. Select one public agency, Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services and one private

agency, the joint Commission and differentiate their roles and major activities in

addressing cost and quality in health care.

In recent times, there is growing concern that the lack of equity and fairness with regards

to access and accrual of health care services is increasing. This is further broadening the gap

between the members of different social classes within the American society and this can

eventually result in adverse impacts on the society (Damberg, Mandel, Martsolf, Raaen, &

Sorbero, 2014). Already, quality care service is being regarded as a reserve for the well to do in

the society in the extent that the more wealthy individuals are, the higher quality of health care

services they accrue (Glassman, 2017). There currently exist different organizations, and

institutions that are focused on mitigating the existing chasm between cost and quality in health

care in efforts of ensuring that everyone is able to access the same quality care regardless of their

financial status and overall social class.

Public Agency: An example of a public agency engaged in efforts of addressing cost and

quality in health care is The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The AHRQ

is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the safety and quality of health care services

are improved (Kronick, 2016). The organization is focused on developing information, tools and

knowledge that foster improvement of health system performance. Its main goals are on ensuring

that health outcomes keep on improving and with regards to cost and quality of care AHRQ uses

specific quality indicators that determine standards of quality (Kronick, 2016). The indicators are

the measure that work at ensuring that health institutions meet expected, regulated, and
