Cardiovascular disease is the number two cause of mortality amongst Latinos in the
United States (Balfour et al, 2016). “Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 23.5% of all
deaths in the United States (US) making it the nation’s leading cause of mortality” (Balfour et al,
2016). While Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause in Hispanics, in comparison to Non-
Hispanics, the rates of coronary heart disease and cardiac mortality are lower. There is an
insufficient understanding of Latino Cardiovascular Heart Disease risks, determinants, and
interventions that impact health care. Hence, the Latino population presents a unique
opportunity for intervention efforts.
Social determinants of health reflect the social factors and physical conditions of the
environment in which people are born, live, learn, play, work, and age (Social Determinants of
Health 2019). Examples of social determinants of health include safe housing, quality of
education, economic and job opportunities, public safety, racism, social norms, socioeconomic
conditions, language, and literacy (Social Determinants of Health 2019). First, it is important to
note that most interventions have not been aimed at social determinants of health when
addressing Cardiovascular Disease in Hispanics. “lower SEP in the United States is associated
with a greater prevalence of CVD risk factors and a higher incidence of and mortality resulting
from CVD." It has been observed that lower socioeconomic conditions in Hispanics lead to a
higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. Further, it has been found that "poor
socioeconomic conditions in early life appear to make an important contribution to disease risk
in adulthood, especially when early-life factors influence the developmental trajectories of
important adult risk factors" (Havranek et al., 2015) the median household income of Hispanics
(USD $39,600) was 52% lower than that of NHWs (USD $60,300). Socioeconomic conditions do
lead to Hispanics not being able to attain health care, having a lower quality of life, and not
being able to buy healthy food which all impacts cardiovascular risk factors. An evidenced-
based interventional in the Bronx aimed at social determinants include providing healthy food,
meals, and cooking classes for Hispanics. The Latino education project has a nutrition
intervention program that has shown proving appropriate nutrition impacts cardiovascular risk.
(Havranek et al., 2015). Hence, an intervention to improve social determinants would include a
robust nutritional program including how to read food labels, provide nutritious food, how to
cook meals, and nutritional education. This would help alleviate the impact of the economic
determinant that thereby impacts the availability of the quality of food, fresh food, and food
literacy. Another intervention would be to help the Latino community sign up for affordable
health care or free clinics (Havranek et al., 2015). It was found that “about half of Hispanics who
are uninsured have household incomes under 133% of the poverty line (about USD $15,500 a
year), which makes them eligible for Medicaid” Havranek et al., 2015)., yet a substantial
number does not sign up. An evidenced-based program in the Bronx that utilized outreach both
through the community and faith organizations to help Latino's sign up saw an impact on health
in the community (Havranek et al., 2015). In all, social determinant interventions will need to
be multifold because of the interconnectivity.
Health services are another health determinant. In the context of being a health
determinant, having a lack of access, or limited access, high cost, lack of insurance, or limited
language access to health services impacts an individual’s health status (Social Determinants of
Health 2019). For example, when individuals do not have health insurance, they are less likely
