APPLICATION OF STATISTICS IN HEALTH CARE 2
In health care, statistics provide very helpfully well organized and easily understood
information very vital for health care management, progress checking, record keeping and future
planning (Mertler& Reinhart, 2016).
Mean is appropriate when the population data is discrete (can only take values of
integers) or continuous (can take any form) but more accurate in symmetric distribution that is
valued at relatively equally spread frequencies. Mean makes use of all data set values, this can be
inappropriately used if some of the data set values to look unusual in comparison to the rest
either by being too large or too small which tend to push mean from the center(Triola, 2011).
Median is appropriate for skewed data that is data not equally distributed because they
have a small impact on the outcome. Due to this median is appropriate where the data set has few
extreme values. It is also appropriate for data on an ordinal scale and with frequency data that is
data organized on frequency tables. However, the median is inappropriate in qualitative data that
is data in non-numeric form since it cannot be logically ordered (Triola, 2010).
The mode is appropriate for categorical data that is data organized into categories or
groups as it is basically the most occurring for instance in a health care on a certain day male
patients were 55% while female patients where 45%. In this data, neither mean or median can be
calculated but the mode is male patients since they were the most occurring. The mode in some
scenarios may not appropriately show the center especially for continuous data as the distribution
may not have mode if the value is different. In such a scenario mode and median are preferred.
