LEARNING PROGRESSIONS 2
Learning progressions are the more successful sophisticated ways of rationalizing ideas
following each other over a wide period of time (Heritage, 2008). There are various other
definitions of learning progressions that represent various ideas. Are explanations of how
students acquire more skills that is how knowledge is built over time within a discipline over a
period of time (Stevens, 2007 p.2). It is also a set of building blocks carefully organized in a
sequence that students must expertise (Popham, 2007, p.83). A deeply rooted idea in the various
definitions of learning progressions is the belief of upright (vertical) development over a broad
timeframe. Learning is pictured to be a development of progressive sophistication in knowledge
acquirement within certain expertise. Progression is another idea too depicted. A belief that there
is an order along which students acquire expertise.
Learning progressions (LPs) are explanations of more successful sophisticated methods
of rationalizing topics (NRC, 2007, p. 214). Researchers have defined LP
S
in many different
topics, levels, grades, and scientific aspects. They have outlined various supporting materials
including curricula, instruments, and instructional plans. In making steps in order to provide
common guidance, a working panel analyzed LP
S
from at least twenty research projects. With the
speed at which the society is accepting the belief of LP
S
arises questions of the variations in how
the belief is understood which majorly depends on how educators understand and on how they
conceptualize what makes up the progress.
With the increased adoption of learning progressions, there is fear of being misused to suit
various researchers and reformers in attempt to define learning progression in relevance to their
goals. There are various goals for learning progressions. Shevelson, (2009) argues that goals may
be shortlisted while others argue that goals are defined by standards.
