COMPASSION FATIGUE IN NURSING 2
Introduction
Compassion can be defined as the desire to aid someone. Compassion fatigue is described as the
outcome of compassion and empathy in the palliative care provider with continuous exposure to
stressors (Melvin, 2012). It is a type of exhaustion caused by exposure to prolonged care for
traumatized or sick patients. It is the point where compassion and empathy are lost that if left
unresolved, it results to lack of interest, moral distress, and burnout. Nurses are continuously
exposed to death and endurance of patients they care for causing compassion fatigue. Nurses are
key to caring for patients making this profession vulnerable to compassion fatigue (Beck, 2011).
As palliative care nurses experience personal relationships with their patients and
caregiver posing s risk for compassion fatigue. This calls for the need to source more information
about compassion fatigue. This leads to a job in satisfaction making nurses leave a specialty
clouded with staff shortages already. Without better coping strategies, there is a risk of
Professional compassion fatigue (PCF). This study is aimed at analyzing the concept of
compassion fatigue for palliative nursing in order to understand professional compassion fatigue
and its prolonged effects on caregivers like nurses who care for patients.

professional compassion fatigue? What are the effects of palliative and hospice care to nurses for
