ARTICLE CRITIQUE
Article Critique
The article Health Effects of COVID-19 for Vulnerable Adolescents in a Randomized
Controlled Triallooks into the adverse effects of COVID-19, particularly the mental health
issues and declines in healthy behaviors that has been observed among vulnerable adolescents.
The main research question of the article is; what are the buffering health effects of COVID-
19 on the vulnerable adolescent population? Typically, journal articles of this caliber often
present the research question at the end of the introduction section. However, the authors do
not clearly present the research question, as it is all over the place throughout the introduction
section despite the fact that it is still possible to locate. One of the main reasons why the
research question is unclear is that it is not clearly presented in question form. For instance, the
authors conclude the introduction section with the statement, “…investigations of how to
promote these buffering effects among vulnerable adolescents during COVID-19 are limited
(Miller et al., 2021, p. 294), showcasing their technique to permeate the research question
within other information, which makes it very challenging to decipher the research question.
Provided that the study explores the health effects of COVID-19, a virus that emerged
in late 2019, on a relatively younger age group, the historical perspective of the virus and its
possible adversities is well documented. For instance, the authors conducted a literature review
that revealed depression, PTSD, and anxiety as the main mental health issues facing
adolescents as a result of COVID-19 effects (Miller et al., 2021). The historical perspective
further covers matters pertaining to adolescent mental health, overall health behaviors,
executive function and regulation, and the promotion resilience in relation to COVID-19. The
study, however, lacks in its presentation of the theoretical perspective of the topic, as it does
not offer any theoretical explanation of the health and mental effects of COVID-19 on
adolescents.
