Scenario 1
The theory's impact on the teacher-student relationship
In 1988, William Isaac Thomas and Dorothy Swaine Thomas came up with the Thomas
Theorem (Bornmann & Marx, 2020). The Thomas theorem is a sociology theory that explains that
the reality of situations depends on how we define them (Bunge & Boudon, 2017). Hence if we
believe a situation is real, then it becomes real to us, so our interpretation of a situation is the one
that leads to the action. Notably, if we believe that something is real, we will behave like our belief
in its reality. So, our definition of reality depends on our subjective interpretation and not the actual
truth.
The sociology theory provides an opinion and analysis of a situation and leads us to act
according to our views and analysis (Mission, 2019). It does not impact whether our analysis and
opinion are right or wrong, but as long as we believe that's the reality, it becomes our reality.
Researchers have referred to the Thomas Theorem as a self-actualization prophecy (Bunge&
Boudon, 2017). However progressive this theory is and the significant influence on our self-
realization, policies, and personalities, it harms our judgment. The theorem leads to societal
challenges such as affecting our intimate relationships, family relationships, and education. When
more people define situations as being real, they become real, leading to a societal action that leads
to societal challenges.
Therefore, as per Thomas Theorem, the interaction between teachers and students is highly
influenced by this theorem. In this instance, a teacher may consider a student more intelligent than
others. This becomes the teacher's reality and causes an action whereby the teacher will most likely
