Things Fall Apart
Things Fall Apart is a book by Chinua Achebe, and is set in Umuofia, a cluster of nine
villages on the lower Niger, it has explored several themes that allow the author to explore the
various concepts that are typical of the society. Their proud traditions, and great skill in war
make them a powerful clan. The main character is Okonkwo, a man who rose from nothing to
become a powerful person, and a great man respected by his people. The book revolves around
him, and takes us through the experiences, and challenges he goes through in order to become a
lord of his clan. This quest makes him do a number of things some of which land him in trouble,
and he finally has to take his own life. When an author writes a novel, or a book, there is usually
a driving force behind it. This is the theme of the book, and it may at times appear without the
author even having intended for it. The theme usually acts to guide the author by acting as a
controller of where the story goes, and how the characters develop. The theme also affects the
mood of the story, and the type of styles that will be employed. Chinua Achebe’s story
introduces social disintegration, and the effect colonialism had on the natives of the regions. The
traditions that were practiced by the people, and their beliefs which they were proud of, and
practiced were clearly expressed. The author focused on the effect certain beliefs, and traditions
had on the lives of individuals, and families as a whole brought out through Okonkwo’s exile,
and the sacrificing of a boy, all of which is discussed within the contexts of various skillfully
developed themes.

Themes
A theme is the subject of a piece of writing, and usually conveys a central idea that is
usually recurring, and acts to convey a certain lesson behind it to the readers. There are many
themes which are brought out in Things Fall Apart with some recurring throughout the book
while others are occur in particular settings. They include:
Social Disintegration
Social disintegration can be defined as the decline of society over a period of time which
may be due to a number of factors usually breakdown of the existing social order. A society
usually lives in a certain way abiding by a certain system that is not political law but accepted by
the people of that society. The disintegration of the Igbo society was central to this book. The
clan is split into two; those who are pro-settlers, and those who were anti-settlers. This kind of
division is the cause that the clan started internal quarrels which even led to further
disintegration. The anti-settlers viewed the other side as traitors who were willing to forget their
traditions, and take on into this new religion called Christianity (CliffsNotes). This resulted in the
burning of a church. The Igbo society was also split into clans which meant different sides had
different opinions which would result in the society slowly decaying due to different opinions,
and practices, and in the end the white settlers would find it easy to impose their rule on them.
The division occurs both on family, and societal level (Gradesaver). The faith divides
okwonkwo, and his son, and the people who stand to gain a lot from converting are those who
had no title in the society hence they see they have nothing to lose. This affects the Igbo culture
to the core since religious beliefs play a very big role in the societal social order. A tribal’s
society most important aspect is the total obedience to the elders who rule the religion as well as
unity. A break in one of this leads to the start of societal disintegration.
