Background

- The scenario under study is a person by the name Doe who has been reported to have

assaulted police officers claiming that they were alien policemen sent to take over the world.

He argued that these alien policemen would kill innocent people. Having attacked police

officers, Doe has to undergo psychological checkup and treatment before his trial. When

presented before a psychologist, Doe’s mental status can be tested using several tests even

though the best mental test for Doe is the Mental Status Exam (MSE).

Mental Assessment for Doe

- The Mental Status Exam (MSE) is a clinical psychological assessment in psychological

practice that is designed in a structured manner that helps psychologists to observe and

describe the mental functioning of a patient. The primary areas that this test focuses on are

the patient’s appearance, behavior, attitude, mood, speech, and perception, thought process,

insight, judgment, thought content and mood effects (Brannon, 2016). In most cases, MSE

domains may differ, the names may also be different, and the assessment may be conducted

in a different order, but the test is the same.
