In training, what are needs assessments and how are they used?
Needs assessments are very significant because they allow one to determine if specific
training is necessary. Usually, whenever a needs assessment is required, it will involve factors
such as organizational analysis, person analysis, and task analysis. Needs assessments need to be
conducted properly because if they are not, the training will not provide what has been expected
and promised in the first place. Causes of a needs assessment are for instance, lack of basic
skills, new products, new jobs, a customer request, and so on. However, the cause of a needs
assessment does not guarantee that the training is the perfect solution. The outcome of needs
assessments are of utmost importance, as it helps identify, for instance, what trainees need to
learn, what type of training is necessary, and in what form the training should be evaluated. It is
also very valuable to know who should participate in the needs assessments. As stated by Noe
(2008), “Because the goal of needs assessment is to determine whether a training need exists,
who it exists for, and what tasks need to be trained, it is important to include managers, trainers,
and employees in the needs assessment process” (p.92). Previously, only the upper division was
involved in the needs assessments; today, both the lower and upper level personnel are included.
In addition and as stated further by Noe, there are different methods used to conduct needs
assessments, which include “observing employees performing the job, utilizing online
technology, reading technical manuals and other documentation” ( Noe, 2008, p.94).
