Play Analysis: A Doll's House
Introduction
Like is with most plays of Henrik Ibsen, A Doll's House is quite the eye-catching play
with mature development throughout its body and covers some themes, some of which remain
relevant even in today's world, the century late. Within the play, the main characters are played
by Nora and Torvald Helmer as well as Kristine Linde, Dr. Rank and an unscrupulous employee
of the bank Krogstad. The play revolves around the marriage of the Helmer family and the
turbulence encountered within the wedding including the final trigger. Additionally, the role of
friends and acquaintances within the matrimony of two adults is exploited along with their ability
to make a marriage work or eradicate it. In the analysis below, the raised issues are looked into
as well as a comprehensive look into the meaning of the play alongside the effect that the game
draws from the audience.
Based in Denmark and written in the 19th century, the play seeks to highlight the plight
of married women in that period and time. Apparently, the women in the Scandinavian countries
in that time were limited in regards to their financial opportunities. For that, the female
population of the nation was unable to sort out most of their economic issues and were thereby
dependent on the male half of the populace. Being the acute observer of the society he was with
the additional inspiration of the experience of a friend, Henrik Ibsen was primed to write the play
that had to address the situation of the society.
