Body composition assessments
There are some methods to determine the body composition. Body composition
measurement is an essential assessment for every client. The methods of body composition
assessment include Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), underwater weighing, potassium
ion, bioelectrical impedance (BIA), ultrasound, near-infrared interaction (NIR), and skinfold
thickness.
In this case, I will use the skinfold thickness method which is one of the oldest and also
the most common method to determine body composition of a person and the percentage of body
fat. The test will estimate the rate of body fat by measuring skinfold thickness at some particular
locations of the body. The depth of the folds is a measure of the fat which is under the skin
which is as well-known as subcutaneous adipose tissue. Skinfold thickness results rely on
formulas that convert the numbers into an estimate of the percentage of person’s body fat

according to the person’s age and the gender. The measurements are taken from particular areas
of the right side of the body. The tester pinches the skin at the specific part and pulls the fold of
the skin away from the underlying muscle so that only the skin and the fat tissue are being held.
Some special skinfold calipers are now employed to measure the skinfold thickness in
millimeters. Two measurements were recorded and averaged (Henry, & Christiani Jeyakumar,
2018).
