Discussion Two
Obesity and overweight are highly prevalent in modern communities. The public health
problem is linked to many other health issues that have affected many members of a community.
For instance, if untreated, obesity causes diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.
More than 15.5% of high school and college students are obese and overweight, which is a risk
factor for health conditions for youths and adolescents. Schools have recorded high rates of
obesity and have called for actions to address the public health issues in the communities. This is
mainly caused by poor diets and the lack of physical exercise programs in different schools.
Seskin (2010) argues that schools in the community need to activate effective programs to
prevent obesity. This has led to the initiation of complete street programs that would allow
students and members of the community to access places for walks and riding bikes to and from
work and schools as a strategy of enhancing physical exercises. Schools in the community have
developed policies and programs that advocate for diet control and physical exercises regularly
to improve the mentality of students to accept the fight against obesity (Nihiser, Merlo, & Lee,
2013). The challenge affecting the program is the decisions of schools to provide junk foods to
the students. The schools have the moral and ethical responsibilities of regulating the meals
offered to the students at school. Parents are also asked to be morally and ethically responsible in
ensuring students do not access excess junk and unhealthy foods in their homes. These programs
are deemed effective in promoting the success factors of the fight against obesity.
Questions
1. What would parents and teachers do to ensure students do not access junk foods?
2. How can the policies improve the fight against obesity?
