Hospitality Leadership Paper
The objective of every leader in the hospitality business is for the guests needs to be met and
exceeded. Conrad Hilton was a founder in the hotel industry who built an international hotel company with
hotels worldwide. He started up as a small business and made it a global corporation demonstrating traits
of determination, dedication and persistence. His transformational leadership style was idealistic for the
hotel industry and he left an unforgettable mark worldwide through his vision, governance and individual
benevolence.
Conrad Hilton developed entrepreneurial skills at a very young age while working in his father’s
store. He later worked as a representative in New Mexico state legislature and had a career ambition of
becoming a banker. Conrad acquired the Mobley hotel which was the first hotel he purchased (Astrum
People Para. 4). However, his initial plan was to buy a bank but the deal did not push through and
decided on purchasing the hotel instead. In as much as he faced a lot of difficulties while starting his hotel
domain because he was inexperienced and new in the industry, he did not give up he was still persistent
and kept pushing forward. During the great depression, Conrad struggled to get by since he had financial
obstacles and needed to start a new. However, he pulled through in the year 1946 and slowly obtained
the hotels he had lost and designed the Hilton hotel Corporations. The first road for Hilton hotels to
become an international company began when he leased Waldorf-Astoria in New York (Astrum People
Para. 11). He passed his company’s control to Barron but stayed as the board chairman.
For the company to remain effective and relevant in the competitive hospitality industry, Hilton
employed a number of strategies. The strategies helped Hilton hotel’s products and services to stay
modest in the hospitality industry. The installation of televisions in all the hotel’s guest rooms was one of
the strategies that kept them relevant and competitive. Moreover, he was the first person in the hotel
business to install Television in the guest rooms. He later created Pina Colada in one of their assets in
Puerto Rico and a reservation system called Hiltron which allowed reservations to be made by telegram,
telephone or teletype (Astrum People Para 13). Notably, Conrad ventured in many businesses away from
hotels while remaining competitive in the field.
Hilton Conrad is a transformational leader and he retains different forms of governance styles.
Basically, transformational leadership focuses on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs which focuses on self-
esteem, self-actualization and self-fulfillment. Transformational leaders mostly provide personalized
concern, intelligent motivation and are appealing (Cherry 1). Conrad became a taskmaster because
initially, he was managing the store of his father and loved controlling things. Apparently, he had lots of
experience in different fields which are military, politics and entrepreneurial skills from working in his
father’s store which made him a visionary leader. Visionary leaders usually push their subordinates or
employees to work beyond their limits.
Hilton Conrad’s way of leading can be termed as transformational leadership. He focuses on
getting a desired outcome through the inspiration of his workers and the delivery of excellent services to
the consumers. The key trait that Conrad emulated was determination, tenacity, dedication, motivation,
persistence, ambition, caring and is risk-taking. Moreover, Conrad tolerated the views amongst the
employees and accepted healthy arguments while delegating work to others. With this regard, this
management style is significant since it takes into deliberation the personal opinions of an individual
which makes the personnel feel appreciated (Cherry 1). By doing so, he showed the employees that he
cared for them which made him their role model due to the high ethical values that he applied. Moreover,
he motivates his employees by working with them and advising them to work hard and have a positive
outlook in life (Alef 8). Conrad achieved this by mentoring them and paying attention to their concerns.

Moreover, he formulated a good relationship between his subordinates and him which enabled the
workers to express their opinions freely.
Moreover, he can be termed as an innovative leader, this is because he surpassed very many
odds while growing his empire and did not limit his creativity and thoughts to one thing alone. Given his
previous political affiliation, his creativity level was high and for that he knew how to develop Hilton hotel’s
brand. His innovative sign can be seen in his credit card creation.
Conrad Hilton’s vision was for the company to become a global enterprise in the hospitality
industry. In the year 1948, he succeeded in accomplishing his dream of becoming a worldwide hotel
corporation. Moreover, the company’s objective was also giving back to the society. In this light, he
accomplished this by setting up Hilton foundation which aimed at relieving the troubled, the suffering and
the deprived individuals (hiltonfoundation.org Para. 7). He believed that it was his duty to assist the world
by setting up the foundation and indeed this helped and still helps many people. What motivated him was
the drive of achieving his dream. He was followed by many people since he encouraged a mutual
communication between his followers and him to allow them share their ideas. Moreover, he was one
who loved and accepted challenges amongst the subordinates while encouraging creativity. Conclusively,
it is correct to say that he wanted to transform a local hotel business to a global model.
Just like any other person, Conrad Hilton had a dream of what he desired to achieve in life.
However, the difference between him and other people is that, he chose to pursue his dream and make it
a reality. He always believed that for one to succeed, one should make a move and act. Besides, failure
should not be the reason why one stops to pursue their dreams rather it should act as a motivation for
people to work hard. This can be attested with Conrad since his first business venture of buying and
becoming a banker did not succeed however, he did not give up he kept moving onwards. He was greatly
tenacious, dedicated and had energy. He only had his mind set on achieving his goal. Regardless of all
the challenges that he faced along the way, at no particular moment did he give up his quest. Another
challenge that he faced but overcame got to do with the great depression which affected his financial
stability soon after he attained little success in the hotel industry. The challenges did not discourage him
from pursuing his goal of becoming a global hotel company. Conrad Hilton’s aspiration of becoming a
universal empire of hotels inspired him to push forward which came to be true with time and he now has
hotels in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.
