FACEBOOK DATA BREACHES 1
Abstract
Facebook has struggled with data security issues moving from one scandal to another. This study
sought to investigate the causes of frequent data breaches and propose solutions. The study
approached the collection of data in two ways. First, Primary data was collected from 150
Facebook users using questionnaires and interviews involving five questions. Secondly,
Secondary data information was collected from online sources over the causes of security
breaches. Findings revealed that security and privacy breaches are partly caused by ignorance of
the users and partly by complex Facebook security, privacy, and authorization policy including
access controls policies. These complex policies make it harder for common Facebook users to
understand them and take protective measure but also leave vulnerability for expert cyber
criminals to attack. The study recommended a binary approach to the solution where users and
Facebook Inc. are involved. The company must improve its policies including cutting off third-
party applications either partly or fully.
