An Argument Against Inference as a Source of Knowledge Presented by Carvakan
Premise 1: The claim that inference may be a source of knowledge or a base of reality is too
radical since it represents just a leap of faith into a realm where there is much more unknown
than what is known.
Premise2: For inference to qualify as a reasonable base of knowing or as a source of truth, there
must be no disagreement concerning the specific character and explicitness of the reality under
examination.
Conclusion: Because the assumption that the premises and the truth or reality are always
invariably concomitant leads to some inferences being true and others being false despite having
true premises about the nature of truth or reality, some inferences could be true but others could
be false despite having true premises about the nature of truth or reality
The Nyaya argument, which asserts that inference is a source of knowledge
Premise 1: Because the nature of probandum is undeniably known, inference also excludes the
possibility of a burden or annoyance of a contradictory type arising from probandum as a result
of the inference.
Premise 2: Inference always provides us with information about an item that is beyond our
ability to see it. The knowledge of the existence of akasa, god, atom, and other such entities can
only be learned by anumana, not through perception (inference)
Conclusion: The Nyaya's contribution to inference is one of his most significant
accomplishments. According to this view, inference is a source of knowledge. It makes it simpler
for us to make judgments since inference adds to the information we already have. Inference and
knowledge are inextricably linked since a person cannot get information about something
without first deduction.
