Leadership and Performance in the Workplace
The leadership and management of any organization pave the way for the success and
performance of the employees. Enhancing relationships within a workplace environment can
lead to positive changes and result in increased productivity and overall happy employees.
Through the application of team and group concepts and theories of organizational development,
the team will construct a plan for Woody’s Veneer Factory to decrease costs and increase
performance and profit.
Group and Team Concepts
With the problems at Woody’s Veneer Factory, some concepts to improve the
performance and diversity of the employees of the factory are autonomous work teams, quality
circles, and team building. Autonomous work teams work by using a small group of employees
to assemble a whole product instead of each person working to make up a whole product.
“Because assembly of a product involves only the coordination of team members, relatively few
resources are necessary for supervision. “Teams are relied on to manage themselves, requiring
far fewer supervisors” (Spector, 2008, p. 325). In this situation, this solution would alleviate the
workers versus the managers conflict. There would be no need for managerial supervision and
the workers would be able to do their jobs without the abrasiveness and condescending tone of
the managers.
Quality circles work by meetings that discuss problems and their solutions with
employees. People who have similar jobs are compiled for the group meetings and issues of
product efficiency and quality are discussed. “The creation of quality circles requires no obvious
changes in the regular organization's structure, activities, or responsibilities; nevertheless, circles
permit problem solving by individuals who might otherwise not have the opportunity to become
