PSYCHOLOGY OF GENDER
Psychology of Gender
Gender roles of males and females in the African American culture
The gender roles in African American culture significantly contribute to the identification
of the position occupied by the two genders. An example of a characteristic used in the
identification of the African American man is his lack of expression through emotions. For most
men of African American descent, emotional expression is a sign of weakness (Brannon, 2017.
Pg 109). Therefore, they rarely cried even when overwhelmed by circumstances. In a second
example, the African American man has been identified as a man of little commitment. It is
believed that men from all backgrounds are less committed to their marriages than most women.
However, the African American man is a little less faithful. The absence of such a commitment
can be attributed to a culture that values men with more children. That way, many men in the
past and the present, believed in siring more and more children. Thirdly, the African American
man is characterized as being strong (Brannon, 2017. Pg 109). They gladly take it as their
responsibility to provide for their families. That shows they are mentally and physically strong to
overcome obstacles on their quest to provide for their families. In the community, the African
American man is given position of power to lead as men are perceived as the head.
On the other hand, African American women are characterized as highly dedicated to the
care of others. They serve their husbands and their children with a lot of dedication, for example,
by carrying out multiple roles at the same time (Brannon, 2017. Pg 110). Their commitment to
serve their husbands and maintain their family is always perceived as a sign of social inferiority,
which at times could be true or not. Some of them are dedicated to taking care of their family
fulltime, leaving them without a source of income. As a result, they are dependent on their
husbands to provide, making them vulnerable to them for abuse (Brannon, 2017. Pg 110).
