What Examples of Advocacy Do You See In Your Own Nursing Practice?
Maintaining human dignity, promoting client equality, giving freedom from agony, and
guaranteeing that a client has the right to make resolutions regarding their health are essential
elements of nursing practice. Davoodvand, Abbaszadeh, and Ahmadi (2016) elucidate advocacy
as being a client representative, defending universal and client's rights, safeguarding a client's
interests, and donating to resolution-making and bracing a client's decision, and being a "voice
for the vulnerable." The examples of advocacy I see in my nursing practice include double-
checking for errors and guaranteeing safety and education. These examples broadly fall under
advocacy with the medical organization and advocacy with families, respectively.
Double-Checking Errors and Patient Safety
Humans are to err, and nurses can detect, avert, fix mishaps, and flag conflicting
oversights, information, or orders by doctors or others providing patient care. Despite the
changing nature of the healthcare area, keeping clients safe is a central nursing duty (Gaffney,
Hatcher, Milligan, & Trickey, 2016). Nurses act as mediators between clients and physicians
who may have missed certain client demands or solutions when advocating with the medical
organization. Nurses advocate by reading the orders and previous records cautiously, double-
check with the pharmacist and other nurses, and inform the physician if something is not clear
before providing a service. In addition to averting errors (Gustafson, 2016), advocacy also
improves client outcomes and reduces costs.
While directions require having clients become active members of the health care team,
ailing persons are sick and sometimes may be confused. They require case managers to step in
and become their advocate on the health care team (Tahan, 2016). Nurses become patient
advocates to avert mishaps, and as a facility case manager, they have an essential duty in the
