It is true, on the face of it, COVID-19 is an issue that transcends economic, racial,
gender, and national lines. The current pandemic has resulted in the shaking up of contemporary
society and has led to a general distrust towards the systems we depend on. Unemployment is
skyrocketing globally, economies are shattered, and governments are spending exorbitant
amounts of money to prevent an utter global economic collapse. Irrespective of the physical
characteristics of the virus, this situation has shown that we are one people throughout the globe.
However, I would argue that the virus is not entirely immune from contributing to the social
disadvantages minorities face in society because the pandemic will have a far more dramatic
effect on the lives of minorities over well-off, suburbanites. Nonetheless, although it is difficult
to consider the positives in a time like this, one of the main factors that have brought civilized
people together is the fact that everyone is in this together, we are all hurting, and although some
are hurting more, the devastation will impact families, livelihoods, and mental stability for years
to come.
It is unclear what people can do to prepare for a future pandemic should we be
unfortunate to experience another one. Yet, if history tells us anything, it is that pandemics, like
the one we are experiencing now, are normal and natural phenomena. This does not make it any
better, but I illustrate this point at the onset to showcase that better preparation does not entirely
protect the population from an instance like this occurring again. One of the main ways people
can be better prepared is by continuing to adhere to the strict sanitation and hygiene standards
that have been implemented. For example, I am sure many of us have washed our hands more in
the past eight months than we have in our entire lives; even if that is not true, we are all far more
consciously aware of handwashing and sanitation today than ever before. Continuing to follow
