Disorders of The Endocrine System
The endocrine system entails a linkage of glands that generates and discharges hormones
that help control several crucial body functions. It also control's the body's capability to convert
calories into energy that influences organs and cells. Thus, it affects how the human heartbeats,
how tissues and bones develop. However, when the endocrine system is dysfunctional, it may
result in some disorders. Some of such complications include but not restricted to, diabetes,
parathyroid, hyperthyroidism, hypopituitarism and adrenal insufficiency. Some of the them may,
at times, have symptoms that appear as mental symptoms. Besides, there various ways in which
the diseases result in psychiatric symptoms.
Firstly, both diabetes types 1 and 2 are linked with mental symptoms. According to
Martins (2017), the transition in blood sugar can result in sudden changes in the patient's mood
and other psychological symptoms. Patients' blood sugar usually affects how he/she feels and
influence their moods. Having diabetes can lead to an illness called diabetes distress, which has
typical features of anxiety, stress, and depression. In this regard, there is a significant linkage
with poor self-image and depression, which affects the patients' lives. Various studies have
discovered the relationship between diabetes type 2 and poor self-image. Further, type 2 diabetes
is associated with some eating maladies. A survey conducted among 320 diabetic types two
patients discovered that 24.2% of them had developed eating disorders (Conner & Solomon,
2017). On the other hand, type 1 diabetic patients encountered psychosocial and behavioral
issues as well as sleeping disorders. Therefore, diabetes can cause mental conditions due to blood
sugar fluctuation in the patient's body.
Secondly, both types of thyroids, which are hyperthyroidism and hypopituitarism, are
