The Magna Carta and U.S. Constitution

Introduction

U.S constitution is a very fundamental document in the history of America. It is the

foundation of American laws, government, and governance. Similarly, Magna Carta is a vital

document in the United Kingdom. It is the basis of English legal and constitutional systems

(Crace, 2014). The two documents were established in different centuries, but they serve a

common purpose. U.S Constitution was established in 1787 by the American founding fathers. It

spelled out how America would be governed and the rights that its people are entitled to. The

English Magna was developed in 1215 during the reign of King John. Essentially, it was created

in an effort to bring peace in England by preventing the King from going into civil war with the

barons.

Purpose of U.S. Constitution

The purpose of the American constitution was to devise how America will be governed.

In this regard, it outlines the structure of the American government. It provided for a stronger

federal government and weak state governments (Kay, 2018). This is called federalism. In line

with this, the constitution distinctively outlined the powers of the federal government and state

governments. It then divided the government into three branches, namely, executive, legislature,

and the judiciary. The constitution assigned each of these branches of different powers. It did this

to ensure that none of the branches was too powerful than the other. This culminated in a system

of checks and balances (Kay, 2018). The provisions of this constitution were contrary to those of

the Articles of Confederation. The latter provides a government structure where the federal

governments were weak, and the state governments were strong and independent. More
