Music Comparison
Introduction
Music is an essential part of our lives. This is because it gives people a sense of belonging
since it brings people with similar music tastes together (Shuker, pg. 12). Music also makes people
happy since it brings joy to all those who listen to it. It also passes messages, which make us
connect with the musician as we try to understand their emotions. We listen to music throughout
our lives. Everything begins when we are born. At infancy, our mothers sing us lullabies to us so
that we can fall asleep. This is because music is soothing and is food to the soul and the heart.
Music is not only made by people but also by nature (Merrill, pg. 19). When we wake up, we can
hear the birds and the crickets chirping as they produce their melodious voice. The waves in the
ocean also produce music as they move. The wind also produces music as it whistles when it is
moving. The trees also produce music using leaves when the wind blows against them, producing
a melody (Shuker, pg. 16). All this is music. In this paper, I will be comparing and contrasting two
common music genres. They are pop and rock music.
Pop and Rock Genres
The two music genres are different but can still be compared. Both have their fair number
of supporters from all over the world. This makes them among the familiar genres of the world,
making them famous and known by many. Pop and rock are considered different since they do not

sound the same, different people in the world listen to them and because different people perceive
them differently (Joseph Church, pg. 32). However, both genres are the same in very many aspects.
Even without talking about any genre in specific, music in general always has a new factor for
each person, which makes a person love or hate it.
One of the most significant differences in pop and rock genres is the rhythm of both. Pop
music is seen to have a softer rhythm due to the use of instruments while playing it (Jordan, pg.
25). Rock, on the other hand, has hard rhythms, which are also less harmonious. This is because
the instruments that accompany it tend to be played faster and louder than pop (Joseph Church,
pg. 27). Although the instruments used in both genres are the same, the difference comes in since
the instruments are not played the same.
We can also look about as we compare both rocks and pop as the artists of the two genres.
First, it is essential to note that artists of both genres dress differently. Pop artists mainly wear
fashionable clothes, which are pretty, modern and trendy (Jordan, pg. 26). The clothes they wear
make them look like models. This is because they mainly wear clothes from the brands that they
are paid to advertise.
On the other hand, rock artists are different and like to wear clothes that appear old and
dirty. They also don’t attempt to look like models or like pop singers (Joseph Church, pg. 30). This
is because they want to be seen with darker sides. This results in them having long hair, dark
makeup, and leather outfits, which are also black to emphasize their dark side. In the end, both pop
and rock artists wear clothes that make their fans connect and identify themselves with them
(Joseph Church, pg. 31). The dressing also makes them unique as it shows they belong to a specific
genre.
