SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION 2
Social construction
Social construction is the meaning or notation that is given on something by society. The
people in the society then create a fixed perception of how they view and deal with the particular
object (Henslin, 2019). The talk by Chimamand Adichie clearly shows how social construction
exists in the current world. She explains all this as she narrates her story on the dangers of a single
story. Single stories have been seen to be the main cause of many social constructions. We all
believe what we are told if it is repeated to us over a long period. People also judge a race or ethnic
group based on what one person in the race or ethnic group does, even though other people do not
do the same thing.
In her story, Adichie explains how she viewed the man who worked at home to be poor.
All along, she thought the same, and that was the image that was painted in her head. However,
once she visits their home, she is surprised to see the baskets that they weave. She says the baskets
are beautiful, and she could not have believed that the man who worked at their place had a family
that could make such a basket. That is an example of social construction in terms of ethnicity.
When she joins the university, she is placed in the same room as a white girl. The white
girls shocked when she notices that Adichie could speak English. This was because as she grew
up, she was made to perceive that Africans were illiterate. The above examples show how social
construction can be based on race and ethnicity. In terms of minority and majority groups, social
construction is not affected by that. This is because the majority group can have theories about a
majority group, which is wrong and vice versa (Ore, 2018). It is, therefore, important that we all
try and understand other ethnic groups and races to avoid having stereotypes about each other.
