DEVELOPMENT IN ZAMBIA 2
Development in Zambia
With the invention of so many things today, it is evident that so many countries are growing
at an alarming rate. Others are growing, but the development of the country is very small and close
to negligible (Paine, 2015). This has caused many people to be unemployed and live in poor
conditions, especially in third world countries. In this paper, I will be exploring some of the
problems that developing countries face as they try to develop and build their economy. It is
important to note that the development shown in third world countries only benefits a few people
in society, making the poor people remain poor even though the country is showing development.
For my assignment, I carried out my research on Zambia. Zambia is a developing country
located in south-central Africa. It is the leading producer of copper in the continent of Africa and
among the leading in the world too (Mebratu & Swilling, 2019). I picked Zambia as my country
of choice since it is a third world country whose development is very small. In addition, the country
has been hit by periods of drought in the past few years, affecting the development and growth rate
of its economy. Another reason for picking Zambia was due to the many corruption cases that are
emerging each day and hindering the growth of the economy of the country.
In terms of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and Human Development Index,
Zambia is ranked at position 153 in the world with an index of 0.591 (Mebratu & Swilling, 2019).
This is a very low index meaning most of the citizens in the country are poor. The levels of
inequality in the country are also high since men are thought to be better than women are. The
unemployment levels in the country are very high, making the country suffer a lot since lack of
employment increases poverty levels. When it comes to the Gini index, the country is ranked fourth
in the world after South Africa, Namibia, and Suriname (Mebratu & Swilling, 2019). The first two
countries on the list, just like Zambia, are found in Africa. The Gini index of Zambia falls at 57.1,
