After reading the standards for your state, how do you feel about your role and ability as
an educator to align these standards to the curriculum you will be teaching?
After reading the standards in my state of Iowa, I feel confident in my role as an educator. The
Iowa Early Learning Standards are current as of 2017 and are constantly being reviewed and
revised. Education is the only field in which other careers are made possible. Teachers are given
countless chances to change students’ lives and shape their futures every day. I plan to stay
current on the standards by taking advantage of any professional development opportunities that
I can. I feel that this will greatly benefit not only myself as an educator, but my coworkers, peers,
students’ families, and most importantly it will benefit my students.
Why do you feel it is important to use standards as a guide as you plan for children’s
learning experiences?
I believe it is important to use standards as a guide for planning children’s learning experiences
because early education teachers are essentially setting the foundation or groundwork for their
students to build the rest of their education on. A child must hit their development milestones
before being able to move on to the next step. These standards help in many ways, especially
when it comes to a child’s growth, development, and learning.
What are at least two ways you can help families understand the connection between the
standards and the curriculum you will be teaching?
I believe that by creating a safe learning environment is key when it comes to helping families
understand the standards and curriculum I will be teaching. A safe environment will lead to
trusting relationship between the student, the students’ families, my classroom, the school, and
myself.
