Introduction
Social injustice can be discerned as comprising situations in which a dominant group is
made to recognize the inequity that leads for others due to their relative position in the structure
of power. The concept of social injustice encompasses the manner in which unjust actions are
progressed within society. According to the various philosophies of human value, the presence of
life, in itself, is the determination of equality in the value of individuals. Social injustice is
progressed in situations where equals are treated unequally. Discrimination and social injustice
have manifested in healthcare services and are cited as the major reason for the failure to realize
universal care and progressive developments in care. Although most laws prohibit the
advancement of these vices, the practices are deeply rooted in society, making it difficult to
eradicate the likelihood of its manifestation in health. Discrimination within the healthcare
setting has been defined as sustained inequality between individuals on the basis of illness,
sexual orientation, disability, and any other measure of diversity within the healthcare setting.
People in socially disadvantaged groups face a myriad of challenges to their health.
Discrimination and social injustices have often been anchored on group statuses such as gender,
immigration status, race and ethnicity, and religion. According to the United Nations, these
forms of discrimination have been documented as part of the healthcare challenge.
Individuals within minority or otherwise socially disadvantaged groups are confronted
with multiple layers of challenges that negatively impact their health and wellbeing.
Discrimination directly progresses psychological stress pathways, which indirectly influence
health through behavioral responses. There have been links between perceptions of
discrimination and health-related behaviors such as sleep disorders, exercise, and substance
abuse. According to Wilkinson & Pickett 2010, more people suffer from mental illness in
