CISO vs. CIO Conflict Role Play
CIO: Good morning. Do you have a few minutes to discuss the results of the penetration test
your team has performed on our company? I'd like to know the test results and how things went.
CISO: Good morning. Yes, I do have the results on the penetration test performed, and the
results do not look good. Our senior security manager and information security auditor's findings
reveal that the company has a serious lack of security measures, which places the company at a
high risk of a network breach.
CIO: That's absolutely impossible! My security team has, over the past, made sure we have the
correct security procedures in place. Are you telling me that my configuration isn't properly set
up to safeguard our company's network?
CISO: No. I did not say your configuration of the network isn't correct. My suggestion is that we
need to update our security information.
CIO: How are we doing with our monthly vulnerability scanning and patch management?
CISO: We will need to implement a costly security update to our systems by adding intrusion
detection software as we move forward.
CIO: Why would we need to install that if it is going to cost us so much?
CISO: Intrusion detection software is essential for mitigating the threats of unknown users
accessing our systems or malicious activity that could be happening.
CIO: So, you are saying that this costly upgrade is essential to our company moving forward?
CISO: Yes, the activity will be monitored and can be reported to a member of our team, or
myself, in order to stop any threats to our systems quickly. The quicker we are able to respond to
these threats, the more information we save, and sooner we secure our systems.
