The national institute of health and other healthcare stakeholders have developed novel
approach to address violence against children, gender based as well as domestic violence.
However, the vital knowledge and the necessary infrastructure required to prevent abuse against
the elderly lag decades behind. For instance, the number of workforce trained to identify,
mitigate, prevent and study elder abuse (geriatricians) are ten times less compared to health care
workers trained about children(paediatricians). Besides the number of geriatricians keep falling
even with the elderly population rising (Lundebjerg & York, 2015). This shortage also extends to
other fields, such as elderly social service workers, with few willing to advance their knowledge
in this field. For these reasons and more, it is vital to recognize elder abuse as a serious public
health that needs to be addressed.
Elder abuse refers to either an intentional act or failure to act, which is harmful to an
older. An elderly person is and individual aged 60 years and above. An abuse, in most cases is
propagated by a caregiver or a person entrusted to take care of the elderly. Abuse include
physical assault, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, financial abuse among others (Goergen
& Beaulieu, 2013). Recent research shows that elder abuse is a significant and a growing
problem with one in every ten Americans aged 60 and above experiencing it while at home in a
nursing home(Dong & Simon, 2016). The numbers are likely to be higher for the elderly with
disabilities, dementia or those with limited function. As such, the number of the elderly people
being abused maybe higher than the reported cases.
A number of strategies can be employed at the action stage of the trans-theoretical model
to prevent elder abuse and also mitigate the consequences. In most cases, abuse against the
elderly at home occurs when a care-giver is stressed, over worked or untrustworthy. As such,
having more than one individual responsible for caregiving duties can significantly lower the
