Clinical Field Experience A
Part 1: Observation and Collaboration
Ask additional and follow-up questions as appropriate.
With the help of your mentor teacher, identify 3-5 students above, at, or below standard
achievement in the classroom environment that would benefit from additional learning support.
Obtain from your mentor teacher the unit and standards the class is currently learning, in order
to prepare for future clinical field experience assignments.
This portion was not applicable as access to a live classroom with a teacher is not available
currently.
Part 2: Reflection
I viewed the following videos to enlighten me about literacy instruction and assessment. I
found that teachers have systems set in place to acclimate students to reading by
incorporating small reading groups in sessions, reading to self or read with a teacher,
whole group reading and reading with a friend. These were just glimpse of what could be
offered in the classroom. I found that educators will build students exposure to reading and
literacy skill by having the student read aloud, be read to, small and whole group reading
and read to self. After, the teacher applies assessments to check for comprehension such as
asking and answering questions, think-pair-share amongst students, graphic organizers,
quizzes, and other projects. Though the videos I observed, I found that educators will
practice and acclimate students to literacy components such as incorporating word walls,
vocabulary quiz's, writing projects and tasks to reinforce aspects of literacy instruction.
Observing more, I found that educators and educational facilities of public school facilities
in Oregon will utilize a program identified as “DIBELS which is a series of test which
apply assessments to students in a K-8
th
setting which assess for literacy. Within the
DIBELS assessment, matrix, procedures, guidelines, and measurements will assess the
student's acquisition for literacy such as assessing alphabetic, phonemic, accuracy,
comprehend and fluency in their reading ability. Thereafter, the DIBELS assessment will
provide a summary of results per students DIBELS assessment to inform the teacher where
the student is at academically with includes abilities/strengths, weakness/barriers and were
there are at in their grade for reading such as below grade, at grade level or above grade
level. The scores of the DIBELS will also provide the teacher with a pathway of which they
