ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
The system involved in chemical coordination across the body is termed as the endocrine
system.
The elements of endocrine system are:
Glands: Secrete hormones
Hormones: The chemicals released/secreted by glands
Target sites: Area on which hormone acts
The endocrine system is a ductless system and the carrier and distributer of hormones in the
body is blood.
Note: Exocrine system also takes part in hormonal control of the body. Instead of blood,
the hormones are carried by ducts. For example: salivary glands, pancreas in secretion
of digestive enzymes.
Hormones:
Hormones are complex organic compounds containing carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulphur.
These chemicals are effective even in very small amounts. They act on target sites to produce
physiological changes in the body.
The target site is usually far from site of production of hormones.
PITUITARY GLAND
Pituitary gland is a pea-sized structure attached to the hypothalamus of brain.
Pituitary gland is regarded as the master gland of the body. Because it not only secretes
primary hormones but tropical hormones as well. Thus, it controls all other glands of the
body.
It effects at least 9 hormones indirectly.
Structure:
The pituitary gland consists of three lobes:
1. Anterior
2. Median
3. Posterior
Anterior Lobe:
The anterior lobe releases most of the hormones of the gland, which are as follows
1. Somatotropic Hormone (Growth Hormone):
Effects muscle and bone growth directly.
If released in less amount the height of individual remains short. The condition
is called Dwarfism.
