The most popular aspects of Wei and Jin dynasties’ philosophy involved liberal
existentialism, as well as nihilism. Moreover, the literary fundamental characteristics of the
dynasties included the lamentation of short life, along with the mysterious, clear, empty and a
desolate atmosphere of both life and death. These characteristics were closely associated with
the social unrest that took place during the era of Jian'an Zhengshi Yongjia’s three
generations, in addition to the powerlessness and the incompetence of mankind exhibited
whenever they encountered a plague. Because of the confusion that was characterized by the
late Han Dynasty, plagues and wars recurred for several years resulting in multiple fatalities.
As such, some scholars and nobles attempted to extend their lifespan by traveling to
mountains to collect stones and medicine. For instance, Ji Kang took medication while
touring Shanze, which made him proud and he subsequently forgot to return to his home.
Another important example that characterized the Wei and Jin literary style involves
the period of Jian'an that remained divided during the Three Kingdoms before the Wei and
Jin dynasties. During this era, an epidemic remained prevalent for civilians, as well as the
noble persons. For example, the he Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest also known as the
Zhengshi Seven Sages, along with other noble leaders like He Yan, and Wang Yan mostly
succumbed to the epidemic at the age of forty years. However, during the same era, Ruan Ji
was able to survive the epidemic and live for fifty years. The literary meaning of this
illustration includes the fact that even though centuries have long been mutually protected by
scholars and noble people, the long-term result of these actions involved a dark and sad
period based on a combination of the plague and war. Therefore, Mr. Shi Shuo Xin Yu and
Xun's Wei and Jin era was a period of sorrow and anguish. The self-styled liberal
existentialism and exuberance signify an approach of articulating masturbation in the manner
of seeking relief.
