MEDIA AND DEVELOPMENT 2
Media and Development
Introduction
Medical scholars have expressed concern over the effects of media consumption on child
development. The group established that exposure to different content in the media has long-term
and short-term effects on the behaviors and attitudes of viewers. Most of the research has
focused on the effects of exposure to aggressive media content, and the potential effects that
could manifest later on in life. A new channel of research has focused on whether the media
could produce positive outcomes in development. The researchers also sought to establish the
conditions necessary to obtain the positive results. The paper focuses on the impact of social
media on the cognitive, psychosocial, and physical development of children during middle
childhood.
Brain Functioning
The first observation is that social media can change brain functioning. Mares and Kretz
use the general learning model to explain that experiences from the media contribute to the
knowledge structures inclusive of person schemata, and behavioral scripts (2015). The theory
further suggests that the knowledge structures can possess connections to affective states, which
an initial experience evoked, and information on typical or appropriate emotions for a situation.
Activation of the areas may cause the interconnected elements to intermingle with other aspects.
The interaction causes a subsequent influence on individual reactions and appraisals
Physical Development
Selected media can disrupt physical development. In a research to assess the effects of
consumption of violent media content, the researchers uncovered an increase in aggressive
thoughts, feelings, and mannerisms, and a decrease in helpful behavior (Mares & Kretz, 2015).
