Relationship between Guns, Street Gangs, and Drug Trafficking Organizations
Gun usage, street gangs, and drug trafficking organizations have been on the rise
recently. However, each of these subjects dates back to ages ago. It is almost impossible to
witness or mention one without mentioning the other because of the strong relationship that
exists between guns, street gangs, and drug trafficking organizations. This paper discusses this
relationship and how it has developed over time. Additionally, the paper discusses why guns are
significant in gang culture and the values that a gun has for gang members. Finally, the
discussion tackles how can change a person from the perspective of a victim, perpetrator, and
witness.
The first and almost unbreakable relationship is between guns and street gangs. In the
United States, people can own guns provided that they follow the right protocols. Among the
reasons for allowing guns in the United States is for protection, more so self-defense. However,
over the years, the number of illegally owned guns has been increasing significantly. Top of the
list of these illegal gun ownership is usually street gang members. First, street gangs engage in
numerous criminal activities, including robbery with violence or attack on other gangs or even
civilians. These gangs usually prefer using gangs because it is one of the most sophisticated, fast,

and effective methods to use. With the guns, the street gangs find it easy to go about their day-to-
day activities.
The second relationship is between the street gangs and drug trafficking organizations,
with guns being part of the street gangs. One of the most significant factors that drug trafficking
organizations usually look for is market dominance. Like is the case for all other businesses, the
market is the first main concern for the organizations since they will need people to purchase
their products. Secondly, drug trafficking organizations need distributors for their commodities.
Thirdly, organizations need security for both their products and the market. Street gangs usually
play all the three roles mentioned above. They usually mark their territories and then use their
dominance to distribute the drugs. Therefore, every drug trafficking organization always looks
for gangs that they can partner with for their businesses. Again, the street gangs execute all of
these actions using guns.
Some of the values of guns to gangs are already evident from the illustration above. First,
gangs use guns for protection. Surviving the streets and dominating a specific region always
come at a high price (Wheeler 64). It generally means having to keep all the other gang members
away, and this often involves a lot of violence. As already mentioned, guns come in handy as the
best protection during such altercations. Secondly, guns give gang members the confidence to
attack other gang members or even the law enforcers. For instance, “police in Mexico are not
only under pressure to swap their allegiance from the government to cartels, they are also
seriously outgunned” (Bonello 5). The gang members always increase their motivation to engage
in violence from such successes while also increasing their trust in guns as capable and
dependable weapons.
