Influence of Politics and Power
Organizations are political structures, which mean that they operate through the
distribution of authority. Also, organizations usually have a way through which the management
displays power. In every organization, individuals are usually motivated with the sole aim of
securing and make use of power to obtain a better organizational setting (Pettigrew, 2014, p. 12).
However, there are instances where managers fail to acknowledge the place power plays both at
employee motivation as well as in organizational relationships. However, the two terms, power is
politics are usually used interchangeably and through linking of individuals personalities.
However, there are instances where the management mainly focuses on the safety of business
logics.
There is an acknowledgement of the benefits of an individual’s personality elements and
the sensitive application of both strengths as well as limitations of individuals in decisions
regarding power distributions to enhance and ensure that organizational life prospers. In essence,
organizations are usually characterized by the provision of a power base for their staff
(Pettigrew, 2014, p. 13). Through an economic viewpoint, organizations are established to create
more income over the costs, to meet customers’ needs. On the hand, organizations are also
deemed to be political structures which offer opportunities for individuals to develop careers.
Also, they offer a platform for individuals to express themselves through their self-interests as
well as motives. The development of an individual's careers usually relies on power
accumulation as a channel to change the interests of the subordinate into activities, which is an
influencing factor to others.
