Introduction
The most commonly cited infections are the Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) which
are considered as the most significant problem for hospitals today. The HAIs are mainly spread
in hospital settings through the cross-contamination of pathogens which takes place through
various routes of delivery (Eckenrode et al., 2014, p. 11). Thus, the most prevalent form of
transmission of such pathogens emerges through the healthcare providers to the patients. Due to
the continued increase of incidences of the hospital-acquired infections, researchers estimate that
such infections account for about $50 billion spent by the hospital settings annually.
Recently, Medicare and Medicaid initiated a decision to reduce the reimbursement for the
treatment of HAIs and all the associated costs are catered for by the facilities. Moreover, the
infections have always been considered as an issue within the hospital environment but instead
of such occurrences decreasing, they have continued to be on the rise (Eckenrode et al., 2014, p.
12). Researchers have established that HAIs most commonly take place within the elderly
population. With this discovery, it is vital to research to determine the reasons for this tendency
and the associated barriers. In this study, PICOT questions will be reviewed and discussed, the
data, knowledge, as well as search words that will be applied and how wisdom will be gained
through the application of informatics.
