Introduction
Sickle cell anemia is a single-trait genetic disorder caused by changes in the DNA. Since
only a single gene is involved, sickle cell anemia can easily be tracked through families and the
risk of them occurs in later generations, which can easily be predicted (Steiner & Miller, 2016).
The condition has a life span of about 10 to 20 days whereas the life span of normal cells is about
4 months. Individuals with sickle cell anemia have normally shaped cells. These cells are rigid
and have are crescent-shaped. Most individuals with the disease experience pain crisis. Although
each person encounters different levels of pain, most patients experience an ongoing infection or
severe dehydration. The paper explores sickle cell anemia, which is caused by mutation and
regarded as a single-trait genetic disorder.
Definition of Terms
Single-Trait Genetic Disorder
A single gene disorder is caused by changes in the DNA is a given gene and their inheritance
patterns are predictable, such as sickle cell anemia. The disease is an autosomal single gene
disorder containing one mutant copy of a disease-associated gene.
Dominant and Recessive
Autosomal dominant means that an individual only requires a single copy of the mutated
genes to develop a disorder. Autosomal recessive means that two copies of mutated genes can
have a disorder.
