Arguments for and Against the Existence of God
Introduction
The belief in the origin of God was criticized and derided by the monotheistic religions.
Since the awareness, the belief in the existence of one God has also been condemned from non-
believers.
Arguments for the Existence of God
The existence of God has been tried by philosophers to provide rational evidence of his existence
go beyond dogmatic appeals to the ancient scripture (Keeran, 2018). The key evidence with the
corresponding objections is as follows:
Ontological: It is possible to imagine a superior being. But that being could not be superior if it
does not exist.
Objection: you cannot define or imagine a thing that does not exist.
Causal: Everything must have a foundation. It is not possible to continue backwards to
timelessness with causes, therefore there must have been a first cause which was not adopted by
any other cause (Keeran, 2018). That cause must be God.
Objections: if you allow one thing to exist without a cause, you contradict your foundation. And
if you do, there is no reason why the earth should not be the one thing that exists or originates
without foundation.
Designs: Animals, plants and planets show that signs that they must have been designed for
specific ends hence here must have been a designer.
Objections: The standard of self-organization and development offer total explanations for an
evident plan (Keeran, 2018).
