Measures of Validity
Admissions test scores are very widely used as criteria needed to be admitted or even
considered to join any college or university. The increasing diversity among admissions test
takers presents the constant necessity of continuous validation of a test in order to rule out biased
against minorities (Miller & Lovler, 2020). If a test is being accused of being “biased”, it is very
important to ensure validity. As put across by Miller and Lovler (2020), the number one question
we have to ask when considering a test to be invalid is, “Are the implications that I am about to
conclude as per a person’s score on a test really appropriate?” By asking this question, we are
able to determine whether or not the test is evaluating what is meant to. There are various steps
that need to be considered before to making the conclusion of whether or not we are able to draw
inferences from the person’s score.
Tests such as admissions tests usually fall under the umbrella of criterion-related tests
(Miller & Lovler, 2020). There needs to be evidence of validity based on test-criterion
relationship when determining whether or not there’s bias on an admission test. The criteria on
the test needs to measure what it’s supposed to measure. The first step in determining validity on
a test is conducting one validity study, but it does not end there (Miller & Lovler, 2020). If a test
continues to be used, validity studies need to continue to be used, as well. The questions on the
test need to be understandable by everyone in order to clearly measure the scores (Miller &
Lovler, 2018). This relates to content validity of a test, which contains validity requirements
regarding the information on the test and includes construct validity to measure that the
characteristics on the test that is designed to measure (Miller & Lovler, 2020).
Other measures of validity are important to consider as needed evidence to support the
continuation or discontinuation of an admission test. Evidence based on reaction process
