The transformational leader is an agent of change who is responsible to provide others
with a vision of change and ensure that their response line up with the demand for
change. Describe the characteristics of a transformational leader? What are the
impediments that a transformational leader may face when contemplating a change?
A leader enhances the performance, motivation, and morale of the employees for
better performance. Transformational leadership is a kind of leadership approach that leads to
a change in social systems and the employees in an organization. Transformational leaders
can take calculated risks since they trust their instincts and make use of the intelligence that
they have to make informed decisions to ensure quality and high productivity (Alqatawenh,
2018). Transformational leaders are also known to make difficult decisions for the
organization with a clear focus on the vision, goals, and objectives set in the organization.
Also, transformational leaders are inspirational. They can motivate the employees to rise to
the occasion and give their all to ensure that they are productive enough to reach the goals of
the organization. According to Alqatawenh (2018), although transformational leaders have
vital qualities to propel the organization forward, they experience impediments. One of the
impediments that they face is that it is hard to make permanent changes since old habits die
hard. Also, it is hard for them to implement change in organizations that they lead as
sometimes they face resistance from the employees.
The nursing director of an outpatient facility is about to make a major change in the
nursing schedule, which can affect many employees. Currently the outpatient
multispecialty clinics are open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 6pm. In the last staff
meeting, she announced that the schedule will change from an 8-hour shift to a 10-hour
shift, Monday to Saturday. Describe the strategies that your DON may use to
implement this change.
The strategies that the Director of Nursing may use to implement the change of the
schedule from an 8-hour shift to a 10-hour from Monday to Saturday would include
multiple short breaks within the shifts, have team-building social functions with the
employees, and encourage exercises. Allowing short breaks within shifts is essential for the
employees to adjust from an 8-hour shift to a 10-hour shift since the feeling of monotony
will be reduced. Holding team-building functions will boost the team spirit of the
employees hence shifting easily to the new shift (McEwan et al., 2017). Lastly, encouraging
exercises will reduce fatigue in between shifts hence enabling the employees to work for
longer.
